Why won't
run on my computer? It keeps crashing or giving me error messages!
It's because either your video card isn't good enough (doesn't have a feature called Hardware Transform and Lighting, or TnL for short), or you're having driver problems . . . most often sound driver or codec problems.
It seems that about 90% of the crashing problems are related to sound. There are also a lot of people that just plain aren't getting proper sound at all. There are two ways you can try fixing this. Either turn down DirectX Sound Acccleration, or re-install the sound codec package that came with the game. If you have something called the Nimo codec pack installed, that is the most frequent cause of your codec sound issues. See the 9.5 Sound Problems section for more information.
For a video card that doesn't have TnL, you can try using a program called 3D-Analyze to force the game to run on your video card. If you're sure your card has TnL and are still having problems, either update your video drivers to the latest version or search through the 9.4 Video Problems section for more information.
Check the 9.1 System Requirements section, to find out the minimum system requirements for the game to run.
I'm not getting any speech, music, or sound effects!
See the previous question.
Does
run well on Windows Vista?
Apparently, yes.
The FAQ author has heard various reports from players indicating that
runs fine on both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Vista. But I will not be able to personally verify this until I start using Vista myself. Still, considering I've heard no complaints on the various message boards, all evidence points to running the game on Vista as being a non-issue.
Do I need an nVidia brand video card to get all the graphic effects, or even just to make the game work?
No!
Don't get confused by the nVidia marketing campaign ("The Way It's Meant To Be Played") for this game.
will run on ATI cards with full glow effects and all the graphic goodies as long as you have a Radeon 8500 or higher model.
People with nVidia cards need a GeForce 3 or later to get all the graphic effects, including the glow. (Not including the GeForce 4 MX.)
You might find it interesting to know that for the most part, ATI cards actually run the game better than nVidia cards!
Every time I run the game, the mouse pointer changes to a spinning CD icon and it stays that way for a long time. Then, nothing happens! The game doesn't start! What's going on?
This is due to the copy protection used on the game. Some CD/CD-RW/DVD/DVD-RW drives can't read the copy protection properly. Try installing the v1.042 patch if you haven't already, since it was supposed to help fix this problem on most drives. Either that, or try a different drive if you have more than one on your machine. See the 9.2 Released Game Patches and 9.3 Crashes, Slowdowns, and Other Problems sections, for more information.
Be aware that patching the game may render your saved game files useless. See three questions down for more information on this.
How do I know which version number of the game I have?
In case you're wondering which version of
you currently have, note that the version number can be seen on the main menu on the bottom right, or the top right side of the screen under the title.
There are so many different patches. Which one should I install?
As of this writing, there are two choices. You can install the cumulative version of the Official v1.042 patch (tron-update_v1x042c.exe), or you can install the Unofficial v1.042 patch (tron-update_v1x042ceng.exe). Both of these will update any previous version of the game, to the latest. The iterative version of the Official patch (tron-update_v1x042i.exe) will only update v1.030 to the latest.
The Unofficial patch has several advantages over the Official one, so I recommend going for the Unofficial patch. More information about these patches can be found in the 9.2 Released Game Patches section.
Be sure to read the answer to the next question below, which talks about saved game compatibility with your newly patched
.
Will my old saved games work with a newer patched version of the game? I don't want to start over!
Basically, saved games created with any version of the game before v1.040 will work on any later version of the game, before v.1040. Changes were made to the saved game file structure for v1.040, that makes all previous saved game files incompatible with v1.040. Saved games from v1.040 will work in v1.042, however. Backward compatibility for saved games hasn't been tested, hence the question marks in the table below.
Representatives from Buena Vista Games will tell you that each time you upgrade game versions, your saved games will no longer work. Testing has shown that in numerous cases, this is not true. They are just telling you this, so they don't have to deal with you, on the chance your saved game doesn't happen to work, after all.
If you are still confused about all this, the table below should help make things clearer. The table illustrates whether a saved game from the game version in the left-most column, works in a game version from the top row. You can also visit the 9.3 Crashes, Slowdowns, and Other Problems section, for more information.

How do I set up my firewall and/or router so I can play or host Multiplayer games?
Visit the 9.3 Crashes, Slowdowns, and Other Problems section for an explanation.
I can't get my joystick/gamepad to work properly!
Visit the 9.6 Control Problems section for an explanation.
Sometimes when I try to connect to a server in Multiplayer, I get booted off. Why is this happening?
Visit the 9.3 Crashes, Slowdowns, and Other Problems section for an explanation.
The most common reasons are either you don't have the right map installed, or the version of the map or mod you're using is slightly different. The map/mod could have been updated since you downloaded it.
Where can I download custom maps or mods made by other
players in the community?
Visit the 6.1 Disc Arena/Disc Tournament, 6.2 Light Cycles, 6.3 Derez/Team Derez, 5.10 Single Player Mods, and 6.6 Multiplayer Mods sections for reviews of all the released maps and mods: that include download links, screenshots, descriptions, and ratings.
Also see below for links to the sites you need to visit, in order to download all the existing Custom maps created by people in the
community. Use these in case the download links in the FAQ become broken for some reason.

How do I install custom maps or mods made by other
players in the community?
Visit the 10.1 Editing Tools section for an explanation.
You can also download the program REZ Handler, which will install maps and mods for you!
Why is my server list blank when I try to Join an Internet Game?
Your firewall or router isn't configured properly, you're using an old version of the game, or you're using a mod that no one else is using. Visit the 9.3 Crashes, Slowdowns, and Other Problems, 9.2 Released Game Patches, and 10.6 Mods sections for explanations and updates.
I'm encountering strange game behavior! Like stuff going missing in the game menus, or I can't load my favorite game map, or my version number drops!
Visit the 9.3 Crashes, Slowdowns, and Other Problems section for an explanation on the .rez file limit.
You should download the program REZ Handler to help deal with the game's .rez file limitation.
When I type in my Serial Number during installation, the game refuses to accept it!
Visit the 9.3 Crashes, Slowdowns, and Other Problems section for an explanation.
How do I completely uninstall the game? I'm having problems getting rid of it!
Visit the 9.3 Crashes, Slowdowns, and Other Problems section for an explanation.
How do I make my own maps/levels for
?
Visit the 10.1 Editing Tools, 10.2 Single Player Levels, and 10.3 Multiplayer Levels sections. There are also other sections under the Editing area you will want to read, but the provided links are good for getting you started.
Installing and using the Editing Tools can be tricky, so read the 10.1 Editing Tools section carefully! Take your time, and don't rush through it. The answers to many frequently asked questions are there! (e.g. Why do I get an Error copying file cshell.dll error message when I try to test my level? Why can't I see any textures when I test my level in the game? Why can't I see or load any Prefabs in DEdit? And so on. The answers are there, if you just take the time to read.)
If you prefer not to read all that, there are now tutorial videos that explain how to make Multiplayer maps, in the 10.3 Multiplayer Levels section!
Is there any cheat code that will let me turn off the HUD, turn off clipping, get more energy, upgrade specific subroutines to gold, upgrade my performance ratings, get permissions, or get build notes?
No.
These cheats were disabled in the final version of the game. The only way to make these cheats work again, would be to get your hands on what's called the "developer" version of the Lithtech engine specifically written for
. Since this was never released to the public, you are out of luck.
The only way to do at least some of these cheats, is by editing your saved games. Visit the 7.2 Full Game Cheats section for an explanation. It reveals what cheats have been discovered, so far.
Why can't I get a score of v10.0.0, no matter how hard I try?
Visit the 9.2 Released Game Patches section for more information.
Basically, BVG and Monolith screwed up. You were supposed to be able to get a maximum score of v10.0.3 all along, but this was impossible up until the release of the latest v1.042 patch.
I've noticed the game crashing a lot lately, once I reach the fCon levels of the game. What's going on?
The author has experienced this problem. The game crashes on a fairly frequent basis, once you reach the fCon levels. It seems to happen most often, when you are fighting DataWraiths.
One level in particular Command Module would consistently crash at the same point, where you enter the hall with the collapsing ceiling. (Large spire-like structures fall down and block your path.) Very annoying. In the case of this hallway in Command Module, it was almost as if there was a bad spot on the map. It seemed as though travelling down the far right side of the hallway always caused the game to crash.
This still hasn't been fixed, as of v1.042.
What are the differences between
Killer App for the Xbox and the PC version?
The biggest changes are the new Multiplayer game modes added, called Data Capture (Capture the Flag) and OverRIDE (Derez Deathmatch where you can also ride Light Cycles).
There are also four new weapons added in certain Multiplayer modes: the Disc Charger, Rod Rifles, Ball Storm, and Burst Cannon. Ten additional Multiplayer maps have been included, along with new player characters and skins (Sark, the MCP Guard, ICP Kernel, DataWraith, Thorne, and at least two other new characters). Weapons (including the Discs) now use auto-aim to target opposing players.
In the Single Player game, certain maps have been modified to make the jumping puzzles less frustrating. For the most part these levels are very similar to the PC version, but each level has been broken up into smaller pieces with increased load times between them. Certain character conversations have also been removed, and there are small touches such as sound effects that are missing. Cutscenes also play more slowly and are out of sync with the music. In all, the Xbox Single Player experience has significant bugs and is inferior to the experience on the PC. On the plus side, when you complete the Single Player missions: the game now unlocks cheats that give you unlimited energy and/or all the subroutines.
Does the Xbox version of
Killer App work on the Xbox 360?
No.
Microsoft has not, as of yet, added the game to its backward compatibility list for the 360. Until they do, you cannot play
Killer App on the 360.
Does Killer App for the Xbox have the Emulated Classic
Arcade games like the GBA version?
No.
Only the GBA version of Killer App has the Classic Arcade games emulated.
Can the Mac version of
use custom maps from the PC version?
Recently, the FAQ author has discovered a technique that yields success.
Visit the 10.7 Hacking
section for more information.
What's this "Unlock Server Bot Movie" secret I keep reading about on various sites?
That information is not correct. There is no secret "server bot" cutscene in
.
But it exists in a game called "The Misadventures of Tron Bonne", which is a spin-off from the Megaman series of games. Whoever submitted this secret, did so for the wrong game, and all the various cheat sites continue to copy this information without actually checking to see if it's correct.
