GameBooster allows you to shut down unnecessary Windows tasks and services, to help improve performance while you play games. It increases the CPU cycles and memory available for gaming. It also acts as an all-in-one utility to keep track of driver updates, tweak your system, and defrag your hard drive.
Download GameBooster from here. It works on XP/Vista/7/8.
Version 3.0 of GameBooster not only adds a host of improvements over previous versions, but it's now completely free. The company that makes the program has decided to drop the paid version. Now everyone gets the same features.

Re: GameBooster: Tool to help improve game performance
Just updated the original post. IObit has done a major update on GameBooster, and at the same time they dropped the paid version. The program is now completely free for everyone to use. Good call. Charging $10 for a few extra features was a rip-off.

I have used it, too! I still need to install it on my new laptop, so this looks like a good time and reason to do so!

Re: GameBooster: Tool to help improve game performance
Well, it turns out that IObit has decided to start charging for GameBooster again. Boo, hiss.
You only have a few days left to get the latest version for free, before you have to pay for it once more.
I'm normally not an advocate of piracy, but I don't think charging for a program like this is fair game. They should be doing anything to avoid forcing people to pay. Even if it means putting ads in the program. Which they already did in the past.

Re: GameBooster: Tool to help improve game performance
Go figure. IObit announces they're going to start charging for GameBooster, and then they don't go through with it. At least, not yet. It's still free at the moment.
The way the company has handled GameBooster is a bit of a train wreck, at this point. It's a good program, quite useful. But their marketing is pretty amateurish. It's free, it's not free. It's free again, we're going to start charging for it again. No, wait, we're not. Yes, we are. Well, maybe?
