Yup. Could've guessed their answer.
They should, you know, actually watch the first film before dismissing it.

New fans is a good thing. But it would be nice if they'd appreciate the past, instead of always living in the moment.
I've watched lots of films and TV shows from when I was too young to remember, or even before I was born. And you know what? I've enjoyed them. A lot. I don't care that they're sometimes black and white or the special effects are primitive. I can still appreciate them just the same.

Yeah, the one in the center on the rising platform. He's got a yellow tinge, while all the rest are red.
Man, if they'd just put some more details on those costumes - way more circuit traces - my main complaint with the film would vanish. I can take the rest in stride, even if I still may grumble about those things a bit.
I certainly wouldn't have expected the sequel to look exactly the same. What with the goofy looking hockey equipment and spandex, airbrushed artwork, backlight compositing, etc. But they could have evolved the look without almost completely re-inventing it. Frankly, except for the neon glow, almost nothing looks the same any more.
I thought Tron 2.0 was the right way to update the appearance of everything from the original film. In was an extension of the original look. Brighter and more detailed, but not so far astray as to not be instantly recognizable.
