I'm at my mother's house right now, helping them prepare for the storm and bringing things that aren't secured into the garage. We're leaving in a few hours, and they're saying that this is going to be worse than Katrina.

I live on what is called the Westbank of New Orleans, in Plaquemine's Parish. Katrina didn't flood us like it did New Orleans East because of the angle that the tidal surge approached the Gulf Coast. Gustav is coming at the worst possible angle for my area, possibly pushing waves as high as 25 feet into the city and almost assuredly collapsing the levee protection system.

I keep imagining losing everything I own. I think I have come to accept it already, because I don't even care about any of it. I just want my family out of here as soon as possible.

See you all on the other side.

Not much I can say that hasn't already been said, but the very best of luck to you and yours.

Here's some EXTREMELY good news:

The levees are holding up, and Gustav quickly dropped to a catagory 1. Not so much damage is expected. News article:

First of all, if you like to drink alcohol do NOT evacuate to Arkansas. WTF is a dry county? I need beer with my breakfast, dammit...and I don't want to have to drive 45 minutes one way just to find a county liberal enough to sell me a six pack of crap Budweiser. I was highly insulted with I saw the whole cooler lined with domestic swill. But then again, this is Arkansas...the state that gave us Bill Clinton and sawed-off shotguns. Gimme a "Hell Yeah!" and a Coors, brother!

Everything looks okay back home for the moment, but we have to wait until tomorrow to see how fast the water recedes. The worst part of Katrina happened the day after the storm was over...people woke up to three feet of water in their homes because the levees gave way under the incredible pressure of the amount of water that was pushed into the city. Right now, they're struggling to repair a breech in Plaquemine's Parish, which is where I just moved. If they hold it until the wind shifts directions, the water level will recede and all will be fine...but if it continues to gush through that weak spot, it will erode the surrounding soil and turn into a giant hole. This will fill neighborhoods with up to ten feet of water. I'm fairly optimistic about it, but it doesn't hurt to still have fingers crossed.

Well, back to my Budweiser and tequila. I'll probably be hanging out in this hotel for a few more days until they give us the green light to return home.

Hey, we're all glad you're alright. I think the levee should hold up fairly well, or at least better than it did with Katrina. :D

Nah, I'm not anywhere near those kinds of places. I'm surrounded by cows and crops. The nearest mall is in Pine Bluff, which the locals call "Crime Bluff". So far, a few vehicles belonging to evacuees have turned up stripped in Pine Bluff, so I'm watching my vehicle like a hawk (my tower, widescreen monitor, my son's computer and his monitor, digital cameras, etc. are all in the back of the Explorer).

The remnants of Gustav are sweeping over us right now. The trees are bending in the wind and it's pouring. So far, I haven't heard any bad news from my neighborhood as far as trees destroying houses or windows blown out. There are so many ways to get your property damaged in a hurricane.

I plan on returning home before this weekend.

I'm very happy Gustav missed here entirely - we got a few hours of heavy showers and 2 days off from work.

Glad to hear both of you are okay. :D It sounds like Gustav weakened enough, that it didn't cause any major damage. We'll keep all our fingers crossed and hope that your home is still pretty much intact, Avi.

Woah, I'm in the middle of the country and we've been getting remnants of Gustav all day. It's just been a light drizzle, but it was REALLY windy this morning. :D
